      Fashion Revolution Week: #whomademyclothes?

      Fashion Revolution Week: #whomademyclothes?

Fashion Revolution is a not-for-profit global initiative with a mission to raise awareness of the true cost of fashion. It aims to demonstrate that meaningful change really is possible and to celebrate those who are creating a more sustainable future.

It’s no surprise that here at Miik we’re huge supporters of Fashion Revolution. We stand behind the idea that fashion should be an industry that values people, the environment, creativity and profits in equal measure. We proudly manufacture all of our garments right here in Ontario at facilities that abide by safe and fair workplace standards.

Sadly, in 2013 over a thousand people were killed and thousands more were injured when a garment factory collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This was the impetus behind Fashion Revolution and it’s a grim reminder of what can happen when we don’t value people as much as we value profits. Watch Miik co-founder Michael Gaughan's interview with CTV News following the factory collapse in 2013.

This week in particular, Fashion Revolution is encouraging people to ask Who Made My Clothes? With this simple question hopefully people will begin to think differently about what they wear and where their clothes come from. It’s something we think about every day and something that we’re confident in offering to our customers. At Miik, there’s no hiding where our clothes come from and we’re always happy to share the story behind who makes our clothes.

Join us in spreading awareness of Fashion Revolution by proudly sharing a photo and showing your Miik label (#showyourlabel).

      What Matters Most

Donna Smith: Q+A with Miik Co-Founder and Creative Director

Donna Smith: Q+A with Miik Co-Founder and Creative Director

Co-founder Donna Smith wears many hats here at Miik. She’s Creative Director, lead designer and also develops all of the creative materials and branded content. She also manages her own graphic design firm and is a mom of two daughters. Needless to say, Donna is a busy woman! Here she answers a few questions to give a glimpse into her design process and daily life.

Where do you get your design inspiration?

I get my inspiration from a variety of sources but travel is probably number one. Our last two trips to Turkey and Croatia were very inspirational for me. I love taking a design element from a dress hanging in an outdoor market in Istanbul and twisting it completely to work beautifully for Miik. And even better, seeing it become our top selling skirt for spring!

On a daily basis, I will see someone on the street wearing something that catches my eye. It’s usually something I would never wear – nor would our customer – but I love the challenge of “Miik-ifying” that idea to become something unique, yet wearable.

Other inspirations come to me out of nowhere. I am an insomniac so I get a lot of my best ideas in the middle of the night. Great for the collection but not so much for me!

What does a regular day look like for you?

I start the day with either strength training with Michael or a brisk walk. I work from home quite a bit but divide my time between client meetings for Visual Integrity and meetings and fittings downtown with the Miik team. My favourite part is seeing the collection come to life on the models. I love choosing the images, laying out the lookbook and editing the promo videos. I am trying hard to cut back my work schedule to have more of a work life balance. A year ago, I was working 8:00 am to 10:00 pm, including weekends. Now I am forcing myself to stop working after 7:00 pm. I’m not always successful, but doing better than before!

What is it like working alongside your husband, Michael?
Well, I'll be honest with you, we had a rough start! We each have very different ways of doing things. But after a few months, we worked it out. Now, I can't imagine not working with him. He is not the work horse that I am, but he is so smart and knowledgeable in so many areas, and is constantly coming up with brilliant ideas. We are both able to not take ourselves too seriously, and we laugh a lot. I was worried that Miik could take over our lives, but somehow, on the days I work from home, I still can't wait for him to get home.

What do you love about Toronto?

Michael and I find we are really starting to enjoy Toronto again. I think when our kids were young we were just so busy racing between activities. We’ve started going to see live music (The Cameron House has a different band at 6:00, 8:00 and 10:00 every weekend!), comedy shows and exploring the areas of Toronto we used to love before we had kids. We are so lucky to have such great selection of live theatre and concerts available in TO. We have been huge fans of Soulpepper for years.

What is your favourite piece from the Spring/Summer 2016 collection?

What an impossible question, there are too many! I always test the styles the summer before so how about I tell you what I ended up wearing the most? I absolutely love the Tansu skirt – it is so unique but so wearable and I got a ton of compliments. My favourite tunic is the Lesia – great as a coverup or with leggings, so versatile and forgiving. The most easy, comfortable wear-every-day dress is the Simone but my favourite party dress is the Larissa. I also wore the Wynona cardi a ton! Can I do that many?

      Celebrating Earth Month!

      Celebrating Earth Month!

April is certainly an exciting time of year. Not only does it bring the hope of warmer weather, it’s also Earth Month. Here at Miik, we make conscious decisions to help our planet every day. But this month, these decisions and actions are even more important as we hope to raise awareness and inspire others to make changes to support the environment.
Celebrated every year on April 22nd, Earth Day is the largest environmental event in the world. According to Earth Day Canada more than six million Canadians participate in Earth Day activities every year.

This year’s focus is on trees and growing and restoring our global forests. The various international Earth Day organizations will kick-off an ambitious campaign to plant 7.8 billion trees (one for every person in the world) by 2020 on Earth Day. The #Rooting4Trees campaign here in Canada is a commitment to plant 25,000 trees on Earth Day and then another 35 million trees over the next four years.

Not only do we plan on getting our hands dirty and planting a tree or two, we’re also making a pledge to donate to this worthy cause. During the week leading up to Earth Day, keep on eye on our social media as we’ll be posting a special photo. Any time that photo is shared, re-posted or re-tweeted on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram we will donate $1 to Earth Day Canada.

We hope you’ll join us #Rooting4Trees!

Introducing Susan Cadman: Q + A with Miik President

Introducing Susan Cadman: Q + A with Miik President

Susan (or Sue, as she’s known around the office) is a busy mother of two, an Ironman competitor, an avid traveller and, of course, Miik’s leader as company president. Meet the ambitious woman behind the Miik brand as she answers a few questions.

How did you become involved with Miik?

Donna and Michael live in my neighbourhood so I’ve known them for years. We used to spend many nights discussing Miik, fashion and business in general. I’ve always had a passion for fashion and with my background in marketing and statistics this budding business of theirs was very intriguing to me. After having my second child I wanted to get back into the workforce but something was holding me back from resuming my corporate job. Donna, Michael and I used to joke about how one day I’d run the company and suddenly that idea and the timing of it felt very right.

What is the best part of your job?

I love being able to have a voice and make a difference. Often at large companies your voice can get lost, even in a leadership role. Having a small, nimble team allows us to get things done quickly and we can efficiently see our visions come to life. I also have a tremendous amount of pride for the work we’re doing which really turns my ‘job’ into a passion.  And since we are small, some days we all do a bit of everything…I love helping Donna with the designs.

What does a regular day look like for you?

My days start bright and early at 5am so I can be in the pool or on a run before my kids wake up. I then return home to get the kids and myself ready before I walk them to school and daycare. My workday then begins either at my home office, Michael and Donna’s home office or our downtown office… and some days it’s a combination of all three!

What do you love about Miik’s hometown, Toronto?

I love the diversity of the city and all that it has to offer. Whether it’s sports, restaurants, theatre, music or shopping, Toronto really has it all and is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination because of it. I live in a great neighbourhood with my family where we know all of our neighbours; it’s safe for the kids and easily accessible from the downtown core. As an athlete, I love that I can run along the water (Lake Ontario) and as a traveller I love that my family and I can fly almost anywhere in the world from Toronto’s Pearson airport.

What do you hope for the future of Miik?

I would love to see Miik grow into a well-known Canadian fashion brand. I’m so proud of the work we do and the values of our brand and would love to develop a culture that empowers people to feel good about what they’re wearing. My ultimate dream is to see Miik go global and be in a position where we can inspire other brands to change their processes to be ethical and sustainable.

What is your favourite piece from the upcoming Spring/Summer 2016 collection?

So hard to pick just one…my favourite skirt is the Monica in our new stripe, my favourite dress is the reversible Kristen zipper dress and our new Emma in Orchid is my favourite blazer. Sorry, I just couldn’t pick one!
