So, you’ve fallen in love with bamboo clothing! We get it, we have too. It’s buttery soft, breathable, and basically the comfiest thing ever. But now you’re wondering: how do I take care of bamboo clothing? Don’t worry, we’re here to make laundry day a little less stressful.
Why bamboo deserves a little love
Bamboo clothing isn’t high-maintenance, but like other premium, natural fibres (modal, linen, or organic cotton), it does best with gentler care. The fabric is soft, breathable, and stretchy, thanks to all the natural benefits of bamboo clothing, but it can be more sensitive to heat and rough handling than synthetic blends. With a few small tweaks to your laundry routine, your bamboo clothes will stay looking and feeling their best, and will last MUCH longer than your fast fashion finds. At Miik, customers report wearing our leggings for 8+ years and counting!
1. Cold water is key
This one goes for almost every fabric in your closet. Washing in cold water keeps colours vibrant, protects fibres, and helps prevent shrinkage. Hot water can cause shrinkage or break down the fibres over time, so stick to cold and choose a gentle or delicate cycle. It's easier on your clothes and the planet.
2. Choose a mild, eco-friendly detergent and skip softener

Harsh detergents can be tough on natural fibres (not just bamboo). We recommend a gentle, biodegradable detergent without bleach, enzymes, or softeners. These ingredients can break down fibres over time, so skipping them helps your pieces last longer.
Remember to never use fabric softeners as they coat fabric fibres, which can reduce bamboo’s natural breathability and moisture-wicking powers. Using fabric softener also leads to buildup over time, actually making the fabric feel less soft in the long run. And it’s not just with bamboo, fabric softeners are a big no-no all around – for your clothes and your washing machine.
3. Wash with similar fabrics
This is more about preventing friction than about the fabric itself. Washing bamboo with heavy or rough items like jeans, towels, or clothes with zippers can cause pilling or wear over time. But that’s true for all soft knits and stretchy clothes.
Stick to washing your bamboo clothing with other delicates or soft pieces, and use a mesh laundry bag for extra protection if you like.
4. Air drying > machine drying

We know the dryer is convenient, but it’s also one of the fastest ways to break down fibres across the board. Bamboo clothing will last much longer if you lay it flat to dry, just like you would with modal, cotton knits, or your favourite sweaters.
If you really need to use the dryer, go for the lowest heat setting and take your items out while they’re still slightly damp. However, we still don’t recommend it!
5. Low heat only (if you iron)
Most bamboo pieces won’t need ironing as the wrinkles tend to fall naturally, but if you're smoothing out seams, hems or collars, keep your iron on low. Same goes for modal and other delicate fibres: high heat can scorch or weaken the fabric. Iron inside out when you can, and always test a small area first.
6. Store like you would other everyday faves
You don’t need fancy hangers or garment bags, just fold or hang your bamboo clothing in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Over time, strong UV exposure can fade colours, especially in natural fibres.
Bamboo clothing isn’t high-maintenance, it just prefers the same gentle care you'd give any of your softest, most-loved pieces. Wash it in cold, avoid harsh detergents, skip the dryer, and you’re good to go. A little care goes a long way. Your bamboo with thank you.
With much love,
Your Miik team 🤍
