How synthetic clothing sheds microplastics – and what to wear instead

If you’ve ever looked at a clothing label and seen polyester, nylon, or acrylic, you’re not alone. These fabrics are everywhere — in activewear, sweaters, dresses, linings, and even some everyday basics. They’re often praised for stretch, durability, and low cost. But there’s another side to synthetic clothing that more shoppers are starting to ask about: microplastics.

Microplastics in clothing sound technical, but the idea is actually pretty simple. Many synthetic fabrics are made from plastic-based fibres. Over time, tiny pieces of those fibres can break away during washing and everyday wear. Those particles are so small that they can move through waterways and ecosystems in ways we can’t easily see.

The good news? This doesn’t have to become a fear-based or all-or-nothing conversation. You do not need to panic, toss your entire closet, or shop for “perfect” fabrics overnight. Instead, this is an invitation to make a few more informed, lower-impact choices over time — choices that often line up beautifully with comfort, longevity, and buying fewer, better pieces.


What are microplastics in clothing?

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles. In fashion, one source of microplastics is synthetic textiles like polyester, nylon, and acrylic. Because these fabrics are made from plastic-based fibres, they can release tiny fragments as they age, rub, pill, and move through the wash.

That means your clothes don’t only have an impact when they’re made. They can also keep shedding small fibres during everyday life — especially if they’re low-quality, heavily brushed, or washed frequently.

This is one reason fabric choice matters. It’s not just about how a garment feels on your skin or how it looks on the hanger. It’s also about what happens over the long life of that piece.


Which fabrics shed the most — and why?

Not every garment sheds the same way. In general, synthetic fabrics like polyester, acrylic, and nylon are the main ones associated with microplastic shedding.

These fibres are common because they’re versatile and inexpensive to produce. But because they’re plastic-based, any fibres that break off become part of the broader microplastic problem.


Fleece, brushed knits, and lower-quality synthetics

Some fabrics shed more because of how they’re constructed. Fleece and fuzzy, brushed materials can release more loose fibres than smoother, tightly made fabrics. Lower-quality garments may also pill, thin out, and break down faster — which can mean more shedding over time.


Age, heat, and friction matter too

The more a garment is exposed to harsh washing, high heat, abrasion, and general wear, the more likely it is to release fibres. That’s one reason garment care and quality go hand in hand.


Does this mean you need to throw everything out?

If you already own synthetic clothing, the most sustainable thing is usually to keep wearing what you have thoughtfully rather than replacing everything in one sweep. Sustainability is rarely about dramatic resets. More often, it’s about slowing down, using things well, and making better next choices.

A gentle approach might look like this:

  • Keep and care for pieces you already wear often.
  • Replace worn-out synthetics slowly instead of all at once.
  • Choose more natural or plant-based fibres when it makes sense for your lifestyle and budget.
  • Prioritize pieces you’ll actually rewear instead of one-season trend buys.

That last point matters a lot. A well-made garment that lasts for years of wear is usually a better choice than a cheaper piece you never really love.


How to reduce microplastic shedding at home

Even small laundry habits can help reduce fibre shedding and extend the life of your clothes.


Wash less often when you can

Not every item needs to be washed after every wear. Dresses, cardigans, and layering pieces can often be aired out between wears if they’re still fresh. Less washing means less friction on the fabric.


Choose gentler wash settings

Cold water, gentler cycles, and avoiding overly aggressive washing can help reduce stress on fibres. This is often kinder to your garments, too.


Air dry when possible

High heat and heavy tumbling can be hard on fabrics. Air drying is a simple way to be gentler on clothing while also lowering energy use.


Consider a laundry filter or fibre-catching bag

If you wash a lot of synthetics, a washing-machine filter or microfiber-catching laundry bag may help capture some of the fibres before they leave your home. It’s not a perfect fix, but it can be a helpful step.


Buy better so you wash and replace less

What to wear instead: lower-impact fabric choices to explore

There isn’t one magical “perfect” fabric. But if you want to avoid more microplastics in clothing over time, it can help to lean toward natural and cellulose-based fibres for more of your everyday wardrobe.


Bamboo, TENCEL™ lyocell, and other plant-based fibres

Soft, breathable, plant-based fabrics can be a lovely alternative for many everyday pieces. They often feel smoother and less plastic-y on the body, and they align well with the idea of building a wardrobe around comfort and repeat wear. Organic cotton, linen, and hemp

These fibres can also be worth exploring, depending on the feel and structure you like. Some are crisp and airy, some are soft and substantial, and all come with their own trade-offs. What matters most is choosing fabrics you genuinely enjoy wearing and caring for.


Thoughtful blends and transparent brands

Sometimes a garment includes a blend for stretch or recovery. That doesn’t automatically make it “bad.” The bigger picture matters: how well it’s made, how often you’ll wear it, and whether the brand is transparent about fabric choices, certifications, and production.


What about Lycra spandex in natural blends?

You might notice that many of our plant-based garments include a small percentage (usually 5–10%) of Lycra spandex. It’s a fair question: doesn’t that count as a synthetic?

Yes, elastane and Lycra are synthetic fibres. However, in high-quality garment construction, a small amount of stretch serves a critical purpose: longevity and shape recovery. Without it, natural knits can bag out at the knees, lose their neckline shape, or stretch out after a few hours of wear, leading to early disposal.

By blending ultra-soft rayon from bamboo or Modal with a touch of Lycra, we create garments that hold their tailored fit wash after wash. Because the base is overwhelmingly natural plant cellulose and the fabric construction is tightly knit, shedding is significantly reduced compared to 100% synthetic items like polyester fleece. Ultimately, keeping a favourite piece in your closet for five to ten years is one of the most powerful ways to reduce overall environmental impact.
