Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world—it can grow up to three feet per day. It is a self-propagating grass, which means it regrows after harvesting without needing to be replanted. Bamboo is naturally pest-resistant so it requires no pesticides, and it grows quickly and abundantly without fertilizer, thus minimizing the amount of chemicals needed for its production. It also requires very little water, making it a sustainable crop that is easy on the earth.
Our rayon from bamboo is luxuriously soft, long-lasting and easy to care for. It looks and wears beautifully and doesn’t fade or lose its shape like other natural-source fibres.
MicroModal® is synonymous with luxury fabrics such as linen and silk, but is much easier to care for. The fibres come from sustainably harvested beech trees which, like bamboo, are self-propagating. We use Lenzing MicroModal® to ensure the highest standards of environmental responsibility are met—pulp and fibre are produced at the same location and 95% of production materials are recovered, to reduce energy use and minimize waste.
Our MicroModal® fabric is very finely knit for an extremely soft and silky feel. The perfect complement to our classic bamboo fabric, MicroModal® is light and airy, inspiring soft, flowing designs that drape beautifully on the body. It’s lightweight and resists wrinkling (an excellent choice for travel) and holds its colour after repeated washing and wearing.
Sorona® is a fibre made from a polymer produced through the fermentation of corn sugars. It contains 37% renewably-sourced, plant-based content by weight. Not only does it contain fewer petro-chemical-derived ingredients, but it uses less fossil fuel energy and emits fewer greenhouse gasses during its production than similar polymer-based fibres.
We use Sorona® in a blend with bamboo, to give our fabric the look of wool but with the same softness and stretch as our classic bamboo fabric. Available in solid, stripe, and pinstripe for a more tailored look.
Linen is a lightweight, breathable fabric known for its exceptional cooling qualities in hot weather. It is produced from the cellulose fibres of the flax plant which, like bamboo, is naturally resistant to pests and requires no irrigation. Though linen requires only the fibres from the flax stalk, waste is minimal as the rest of the plant goes on to become products like linseed oil and livestock feed. Our slub linen fabric has a subtle texture that contrasts beautifully with our smooth rayon from bamboo.
Prints & Patterns (rayon from bamboo & MicroModal®) As the textile industry in North America shrinks, there is no longer a local manufacturer able to reliably produce the quantity and quality of printed fabric that we require. We struggled with low quality printing, damaged fabric and unsellable garments before deciding the waste wasn’t worth the benefit of printing our patterned fabrics in Canada. To avoid this excess waste and to continue to produce beautiful prints of the highest quality, we made the difficult decision in fall of 2017 to turn to a Chinese manufacturer to produce our printed fabric. Our leopard print, ogee print, floral print and geo print are currently our only fabrics not milled and dyed in Canada—we still produce 97% of our fabric locally.
These eco-friendly rayon from bamboo and MicroModal® printed textiles comply with China’s National General Safety Technical Code for Textile Products, the requirements of which ensure product quality and safety by regulating hazardous substances. They also carry the third-party STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification, meaning these textiles have been tested to ensure they meet specific regulations for chemical content. Like our local fabric suppliers, our overseas manufacturer ensures its employees work under safe conditions, are treated respectfully, and are compensated fairly.
We are happy to share that our printed fabric is unbelievably soft, has a luxurious drape and is as durable as our core rayon from bamboo and MicroModal® fabrics.
