Fabric is the foundation of everything we do. When Miik launched in 2011, our number one focus was the fabricand it continues to be our focus day in and day out!

Here’s what co-founder and Creative Director, Donna Smith, has to say about our fabric:

“When we launched the business, the fabric was the main thing we concentrated on. We were obviously using eco-fabrics, but the most important thing from the beginning was making sure the clothes would last. I looked in my closet, and almost all my clothes were faded. After 5 washes, the cheap fabric would fall apart or lose its shape. Our first season was about solving that."

"We sourced sustainable fabrics and started making basics. I tested the products myself. I still own four tank tops and leggings from our very first collection. I wanted to see how long they would last, so I wore them to work out, and every week they would be in the laundry. They are still my workout clothes today. That was 9 years ago.”

      Selecting sustainable fabrics

When evaluating the sustainability of a fabric, we look at factors like durability and longevity, versatility, production processes with a reduced carbon footprint, and ease of care. Another huge priority for us is softness. No one wants to wear uncomfortable clothes—at Miik, we're ALL about comfort. Because of these factors, we are very picky about the farics we select for our collections. There are two that we use almost exclusively at Miik: MicroModal® and rayon from bamboo. These fabrics quickly became go-to, no-brainers for us, because they meet all of the criteria we consider when creating and producing a garment.

      MicroModal®

MicroModal is synonymous with luxury fabrics such as linen and silk, but is much easier to care for. The fibres come from sustainably harvested beech trees which, like bamboo, are self-propagating. We use Lenzing MicroModal® to ensure the highest standards of environmental responsibility are met—pulp and fibre are produced at the same location and 95% of production materials are recovered, to reduce energy use and minimize waste. Our MicroModal® fabric is very finely knit for an extremely soft and silky feel.

The perfect complement to our classic bamboo fabric, MicroModal® is light and airy, inspiring soft, flowing designs that drape beautifully on the body. It’s lightweight and resists wrinkling (an excellent choice for travel) and holds its colour after repeated washing and wearing. To read more about our MicroModal fabric, click here.

      Rayon from bamboo

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world—it can grow up to three feet per day. It is a self-propagating grass, which means it regrows after harvesting without needing to be replanted. Bamboo is naturally pest-resistant so it requires no pesticides, and it grows quickly and abundantly without fertilizer, thus minimizing the amount of chemicals needed for its production. It also requires very little water, making it a sustainable crop that is easy on the earth.

Our rayon from bamboo is luxuriously soft, long-lasting and easy to care for. It looks and wears beautifully and doesn’t fade or lose its shape like other fabrics from natural-source fibres. To read more about our rayon from bamboo fabric, click here.

      Jacquard Fabric

Our beautiful jacquard fabric gives us the ability to create garments that have the look of wool, with the softness and stretch of our beloved MicroModal. Our jacquard is made of a blend of MicroModal and GOTS certified organic cotton. Jacquard fabric is a highly textured fabric woven using a Jacquard loom, from which the fabric gets its name. The colours and pattern are woven into the fabric, rather than printed or dyed onto the surface of the fabric. Our subtle herringbone jacquard adds subtle texture and timeless elegance to tailored blazers, skirts and dresses. Our buttery soft polka dot jacquard is a cozy way to add a playful print to your wardrobe. Jacquard is the most recent fabric addition to the Miik collection, making its debut in our Fall/Winter 2019 Collection. We love how this fabric looks and feels, and how effortlessly it can be styled to elevate any outfit.

      Prints & Patterns

As the textile industry in North America shrinks, there is no longer a local manufacturer able to reliably produce the quantity and quality of printed fabric that we require. We struggled with low quality printing as our local manufacturing options dwindled every year. The quality wasn't up to our standards, so we made the difficult decision in fall of 2017 to turn to overseas manufacturers to produce our printed fabric. Our printed fabrics are currently our only fabrics not milled and dyed in Canada—we still produce 97% of our fabric locally.

Garments with various patterns and stripes

Our patterns and prints are now manufactured in Turkey by İpeker, a family-owned mill that has been in operation for over 100 years. The facility and its products carry STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification, Global Recycle Standard certification, and vegan V-Label certification from the European Vegetarian Union. In 2019, İpeker was awarded a Sustainable Business Award in the Sustainable Innovation category for their Blue Balance Vegan Textile Process, which reduces water usage by 31.8% and energy use by 60.2%. İpeker is recognized as a leader in sustainable fabric manufacturing and we are pleased to have them as our partner. We are also happy to share that our printed fabrics are unbelievably soft, have a luxurious drape and are as durable as our core rayon from bamboo and MicroModal® fabrics.
