What is a Seconds Sale? (and why we do them at Miik)

If you've never heard of the term "Seconds" before shopping with Miik, you're not alone! We don't know of many other brands (slow fashion or not!) that host seconds sales. At Miik, we hold ourselves to very high quality standards, and when a garment doesn’t quite meet them, we set it aside. Rather than letting beautiful and wearable pieces go to the landfill, we offer them at a deep discount during our twice-yearly Seconds Sales. It’s one of the ways we work to minimize waste and support more thoughtful production.

What is a Seconds Sale?

Every once in a while, a piece comes out almost perfect… but not quite. “Seconds” are styles with small, barely-there imperfections like subtle stitch variations, slight shade differences, or minor fabric irregularities that most people wouldn’t even notice. These styles are still made from the same buttery-soft fabrics you love. The only difference? A small imperfection that keeps them from being sold at full price. The last thing we want to do is throw them away, especially because these garments are wearable, beautiful and oftentimes the flaws really are minuscule. The fashion industry is notorious for its "slash and burn" approach to unsold or slightly damaged inventory. Many major labels regularly incinerate millions of dollars worth of brand-new inventory. Based on a study in Europe, between 4% and 9% of all textile products put on the market are destroyed without ever being worn once. To minimize waste and contribute to a more sustainable production process, we host Seconds Sales twice a year where we deeply discount flawed styles for our customers to choose from. It’s become one of our most highly anticipated events, with over 80% of Seconds inventory selling out within the first hour!

Why do Seconds happen?

Our fabrics are knit and milled in batches, and every garment is made by real people from start to finish — so small variations can naturally occur. Things like subtle creasing from the milling process, a slightly twisted yarn that creates a faint line, a tiny slub or yarn nub, minor stitch irregularities, or even a small hole or spot can happen from time to time. These imperfections are cosmetic and don’t affect the integrity, comfort, or wearability of the garment. Because our quality control standards are incredibly high, we won’t sell them at full price — but we also refuse to let them go to waste.

"We don't believe in quietly discarding products just because they fall slightly short of our strict quality control standards. Very few brands are willing to take the extra steps to rehome these pieces, but for us, it's part of being a responsible business. Our Seconds Sale isn't just about reducing waste — it's about making high-quality, ethically made fashion accessible to more women." - Sue Cadman, CEO and President of Miik Inc.

How our Seconds discounts are tiered

Not all imperfections are the same — and neither are the discounts. We group our Seconds into different tiers based on how noticeable the flaw is.

30% OFF — Fabric irregularities

Why Miik does Seconds Sale

We sell Seconds because we believe small imperfections shouldn’t keep beautiful, wearable pieces from being loved. Many fast fashion brands throw out slightly flawed garments, but at Miik, we’re here to give them a second chance, and do fashion differently. A tiny imperfection doesn’t change the fact that Miik pieces feel buttery soft and stretchy, and stay looking new after years of wash and wear.

These sales give everyone a chance to enjoy Miik at a more accessible price, while also keeping garments out of landfills. We believe clothing should be worn, loved, and lived in — not discarded because of a tiny flaw. Our Seconds Sales are one small way we stay true to our values: thoughtful production, reduced waste, and making our pieces more accessible to more women.

Because sometimes “almost perfect” is still more than good enough.

With much love,
Your Miik team 🤍
